Cyclone Jasper Update
As of 4pm AEST yesterday, Tropical Cyclone Jasper has intensified into a Severe Tropical Cyclone (category 3), positioned 1390 km east northeast of Cairns. Expected to strengthen further, Jasper may reach high-end category 4 intensity, posing significant risks to the Queensland coast. The Bureau of Meteorology advises communities north of Mackay to review their cyclone plans, as the cyclone is expected to gradually move southwest towards the coast this week.
Understanding Cyclone Categories and Preparations
Cyclone categories range from 1 to 5, with 5 being the most severe. Even lower category cyclones can cause power failures and property damage. Queensland Fire and Emergency Services recommends:
- Ensuring your roof and gutters are in good condition.
- Trimming trees near your home, especially those near power lines.
- Knowing how to turn off your main supplies for water, power, and gas.
- Preparing an emergency kit and evacuation plan, including arrangements for pets or livestock.
Electrical Safety During the Cyclone
The Queensland Government’s Electrical Safety Office advises:
- Turn off all power points and unplug electrical equipment if you’ve lost power.
- Avoid using fixed telephones during a thunderstorm to prevent electric shocks.
- Move electrical equipment to higher locations if floodwaters are expected.
- Stay clear of powerlines, trees, and watercourses during clean-up.
Actions When a Cyclone is Imminent
- Secure outdoor items and fasten cyclone screens.
- Fill containers with drinking water and bring pets indoors.
- Stay informed through local media and monitor the cyclone’s progress with QFES’s Cyclone Preparedness Guide.
Post-Cyclone Electrical Safety
- Do not use wet electrical appliances until they’ve been checked by a licensed electrician.
- If you have solar panels damaged during the cyclone, do not turn on your power supply until a professional inspection. Learn more on cyclone safety from QFES’s Cyclone Safety Guide.
